How to Get a Bloodthirsty Kill on Black Ops 2

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War , the latest in the legendary FPS series, has finally arrived. The new title was joint-developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, and brings players back to the Cold War setting of the previous Black Ops games.

As with most Call of Duty games, a lot of interest in the new title is focused on its multiplayer. While there aren't many major innovations over previous entries in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, there are some interesting changes. One of the most impactful of these revolves around the Camo Challenges, which players must complete to unlock new skins for their weaponry. Many players have experienced the long road to Damascus, the most difficult camo to acquire in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. However, while Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launched only a few days ago, players are already noticing some striking differences.

Sticking to the classics

Assault Rifles are the quintessential Call of Duty multiplayer weapon class, and will always be among the most popular picks. This hasn't changed in Black Ops Cold War, and many of the new game's most effective guns are among the ARs. To complete the Camo Challenges for Assault Rifles in Cold War, players will need to do the following:

  • Spray: 300 kills.
  • Stripes: 100 Headshot kills.
  • Classic: 5 kills without dying 20 times.
  • Geometric: 50 Longshot kills.
  • Flora: 75 kills against enemies that are detected, stunned, or blinded, by your Scorestreaks, Equipment, or Field Upgrade.
  • Science: 50 kills against enemies that are taking cover.
  • Psychedelic: Kill 2 or more enemies in quick succession 25 times.

While these kill counts may seem pretty big, they look like rookie numbers to anyone who has attempted to grind out Assault Rifle Camo in Modern Warfare. Most of the comparable Challenges require almost double the kills, and a few have much more specific objectives. For example, having one camo that unlocks after kills with 0 of Call of Duty's Weapon Attachments and one that unlocks after kills with 5 Attachments means that players can't grind both at once.

  • Spray Paint: 800 kills.
  • Woodland: 125 Headshot kills.
  • Digital: 160 Crouching kills.
  • Dragon: 75 Hipfire kills.
  • Splinter: 100 Longshot kills.
  • Topo: 100 Mounted kills.
  • Tiger: 180 kills with 5 Attachments.
  • Stripes: 50 kills Shortly after Reloading.
  • Reptile: 110 kills with 0 Attachments Equipped.
  • Skulls: kill 3 Enemies without Dying (x35 times).

There is one Cold War Camo Challenge that players are finding harder than those in Modern Warfare, however. Though it's not because it's particularly difficult, but instead because it's hard to know what the rules are. The challenge to unlock the Science camo is to kill 50 enemies that are taking cover. This is a vague challenge to say the least, and it seems that Cold War has a very strict definition of "taking cover." Already players are complaining that the incredibly specific challenge is practically impossible to complete in regular gameplay.

The Big Guns

Assault Rifles aren't the only weapon type with simpler Camo Challenges in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War . Even the most powerful weapons in Cold War are easier to doll-up than their Modern Warfare counterparts. For example, here are the Launcher Camo Challenges for Cold War:

  • Spray: 5o kills.
  • Stripes: Destroy 50 Equipment, Scorestreaks, or Vehicles.
  • Classic: 3 kills without dying 20 times.
  • Geometric: 50 ground-based Scorestreak or Vehicle kills.
  • Flora: 50 aerial Scorestreak or Vehicle kills.
  • Science: 3 Scorestreak or Vehicle kills in a single game 10 times.
  • Psychedelic: Kill 2 or more enemies in quick succession 25 times.

They're a fairly tricky set to complete, and it may take some time for players to get the Flora and Geometric camos. However, when compared to the Launcher Camo Challenges for Modern Warfare they seem almost trivial:

  • Spray Paint: 125 kills.
  • Woodland: 40 kills as Attacker.
  • Digital: 40 kills as Defender.
  • Dragon: 75 Air Streak kills.
  • Splinter: 75 Ground Streak kills.
  • Topo: 50 Spotter destroys.
  • Tiger: 50 Support Streak kills.
  • Stripes: 50 kills using the Cold-Blooded Perk.
  • Reptile: 50 kills using the Amped Perk.
  • Skulls: 50 Vehicle destroys.

In terms of raw numbers the Modern Warfare Challenges may not seem that much worse, with the obvious exception of the Spray Paint challenge. However, they've received a lot of criticism from players over how difficult some of them are to accomplish. The only bright side is that many can be completed at once, if players are smart about their Call of Duty Perk loadouts and targeting.

From Long Range

There isn't a single weapon class that hasn't had its Camo Challenges simplified in Cold War, including some of the most difficult. Sniper Rifles are notorious in Call of Duty multiplayer for their high skill-cap and deadly effectiveness in the right hands. As such, they've always been one of the most difficult weapons for new players to unlock camo for. Here are the Camo Challenges for Sniper Rifles in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War:

  • Spray: 200 kills.
  • Stripes: 50 Headshot kills.
  • Classic: 5 kills without dying 20 times.
  • Geometric: 50 Longshot kills.
  • Flora: 50 kills while holding breath.
  • Science: 50 One Shot kills.
  • Psychedelic: Kill 2 or more enemies in quick succession 25 times.

Once again, the numbers for the Modern Warfare Challenges are almost universally higher:

  • Spray Paint: 450 kills.
  • Woodland: 60 Headshot kills.
  • Digital: 50 Crouching kills.
  • Dragon: 50 One Shot kills.
  • Splinter: 150 kills with 5 Attachments.
  • Topo: 50 Longshot kills.
  • Tiger: 50 Mounted kills.
  • Stripes: 25 Double kills.
  • Reptile: 75 kills with 0 Attachments.
  • Skulls: Kill 3 Enemies without Dying (x25 times).

There are a few potential reasons why Treyarch might have chosen to reduce the difficulty of its Camo Challenges compared to the most recent Call of Duty titles. One is that the Challenges for Modern Warfare and Warzone were increased in order to compensate for the fact that players share progression between the games. Another could be that player feedback and internal number-crunching showed that the higher requirements were off-putting to players. While players may never know the real reason, it's clear that many are glad to be able to avoid the grind in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
